The Hidden Roots of Anxiety: What Your Body Might Be Carrying for Your Family System

“Anxiety is a story your body learned long ago. You have the power to write new chapters, slowly, safely, and with love.”
You know the feeling.
Your chest is tight, but there’s no immediate danger.
Your breath is shallow.
There’s a weight you can’t name.
Everything feels too much, and yet, there’s nothing clearly wrong.
This is what it’s like to live with anxiety that doesn’t make sense on paper.
It’s real. It’s exhausting. And for many, it’s constant.
Maybe you've tried breathing techniques, positive affirmations, even therapy...
But the anxiousness still hums underneath it all.
What if the anxiety you’re feeling isn’t just about the present moment?
What if it’s not even fully yours?
Let’s tune in.
What Family Constellation Work Reveals About Anxiety
In Family Constellations, we look at anxiety as a messenger. Not something to suppress, but something to get curious about.
Anxiety is often the body’s way of carrying unresolved stories from your family system.
Not metaphorically. Literally.
Here are some examples of where this might begin:
A parent or grandparent who survived a war or had to flee their homeland
A child who was miscarried, aborted, or died young but never acknowledged
A parent who was emotionally unsafe, unpredictable, or not fully present
A grandparent who held grief that was never spoken aloud
These are events that can go unnamed for generations.
But the body doesn’t forget.
It simply passes the burden down the line.
Often, the most sensitive family members - the empaths, the ones who seem a bit “too much” - are the ones who absorb these hidden energies.
They carry them as anxiety, overwhelm, hyper-vigilance.
Because someone has to.
Until the system is made whole.
What This Might Look Like in You
You may find yourself:
Always scanning for danger, even in safe places
Feeling pressure to hold everything together for others
Struggling to rest, even when exhausted
Panicking when there's "nothing wrong"
Unable to make decisions without spiralling
And most of all, wondering why nothing you’ve tried seems to stick.
In Family Constellation work, we stop asking, “What’s wrong with me?”
And we begin asking, “Who or what am I still carrying?”
A Somatic Invitation: Gently Loosen the Grip
If you’re reading this with a lump in your throat or a flutter in your chest, you’re not alone.
Your body might be saying, “This is me.”
Here’s a gentle practice you can do right now:
Place one hand on your chest and one on your lower belly
Breathe low and slow
Let your body soften with each exhale
Whisper to yourself:
“I feel the anxiety in my body.
I honour it.
I do not need to carry what belongs to another.”
Let this be a moment of kindness.
There’s nothing to fix.
Just something to witness.
You don’t have to force yourself to be calm.
You can allow yourself to be safe.
You Don’t Have to Hold This Alone
If this resonates with something deep inside you - something that words alone haven’t reached - I’ve created a gentle Family Constellation ritual for exactly this experience.
It guides you to explore whether your anxiety is inherited, and how to release what may never have been yours to carry in the first place.
It’s not a quick fix.
It’s a doorway.
